Privacy Policy

Better Speller ("we", "us", or "our") is committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains what information the app collects, how it is used, and what choices you have.

1. Information We Collect

Better Speller does not collect any personal information. All data you create in the app (word lists, practice sessions, scores, and settings) is stored exclusively on your device using local device storage. Nothing is transmitted to us or any third party.

2. Data Stored on Your Device

The following data is saved locally on your device only:

• Word lists and individual words you create or import
• Practice and test session results (scores, dates, word outcomes)
• App settings (word order, number of attempts, voice preference)
• Achievement progress
• Audio recordings you make of yourself pronouncing words, never uploaded to us or shared with anyone else

This data never leaves your device unless you explicitly choose to send it somewhere — for example using the Share button, exporting a .spelllist file, or turning on iCloud Sync, which is described below.

3. iCloud Sync (optional)

iCloud Sync is an optional paid add-on on iPhone, iPad and Mac. It is off unless you buy it and turn it on. With it on, your word lists, students and audio recordings are stored in your own iCloud account so they appear on your other devices.

We do not operate a server and we cannot see any of it. The data is held by Apple under your Apple Account and is covered by Apple's privacy policy. Deleting the app, or turning sync off, does not delete what is already in your iCloud account; you can remove it in Settings on your device under your Apple Account's iCloud storage.

Sharing a student. You can choose to share one student's word lists with another Apple Account — a child's iPad, for example. Only the students you explicitly share are shared, and only with people you send an invitation to. Anyone holding that invitation link can accept it, so send it the way you would any private link. You can see who has accepted and remove them, or stop sharing entirely, in the app's iCloud settings.

Practice results are a separate switch, off by default. With it on, scores and test history sync between your devices and anyone you have shared a student with, labelled with the name you give each device.

4. Third-Party Services

Better Speller does not integrate with any third-party analytics, advertising, crash-reporting, or tracking services. The app does not contain any SDKs that collect or share data.

The app uses your device's built-in text-to-speech engine to read words aloud. This processing happens entirely on-device.

5. Permissions

Better Speller may request the following device permissions:

• Microphone: used only when you choose to record yourself saying a word so your child can hear it in your voice. Recordings are saved on your device, and copied to your own iCloud account if you turn on iCloud Sync. They are never transmitted to us or to any third party.
• Storage / Files: required only if you choose to import a word list from a file on your device. No files are read without your action.

6. Children's Privacy

Better Speller is designed to be safe for users of all ages, including children. Because we do not collect any personal information, the app complies with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and similar regulations. No data about children or anyone else is ever collected or shared.

7. Data Deletion

Data on your device is deleted by uninstalling the app. You can also delete individual word lists from within the app.

If you used iCloud Sync, uninstalling does not remove what is already in your iCloud account, because that is yours rather than ours. Delete it on any Apple device under Settings › your name › iCloud › Manage Account Storage › Better Speller. Stopping sharing in the app's iCloud settings removes other people's access to a student.

8. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "last updated" date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this page periodically.
